Mill Scale
Often shortened to just scale, mill scale is a by-product of the hot rolling of steel in steel mills. It forms on the outer surfaces of plates, sheets or profiles when they are produced from red-hot iron or steel billets in rolling mills, and is considered a rich iron source with minimal impurities.
Mill scale is often sought out by abstract expressionist artists, and is used in refractory production and reduced iron powder production.
